Toth Art on Free Comic Book Day!

I don't pay much attention to free comic book day but I happened to find myself at the store when they were giving away comics yesterday. I was surprised when I heard the clerk offer some kid as one of the free comics an "EC Sampler". I asked to see it to verify if it was what I thought and sure enough, a comic with FOUR 1950s EC stories including one by our own Mr. Alex Toth. Below are scans of the reprint if anyone would like to see. They are from Two-Fisted Tales #22, 1951:

It was nice to know that there was some good art being shown to kids being introduced to comics yesterday even if most of them ignored the EC sampler for the Manga Sampler. Ugh.

This has always been a great piece -- I'm pretty sure the breakdowns and pencils were all done by Harvey Kurtzman and Alex tightened pencils then inked. Of course, by Kurtzman's rules, Alex could change none of the breakdowns and it probably made him crazy, but Kurtzman was a great story teller, so the team-up turned out a terrific piece.

Hmmmm. Doesn't look like Toth inks to me. A more like scenario: Kurtzman breakdowns, Toth pencils, Kurtzman inks.

You could be right, it's been a while since I've read the Russ Cochran history on the EC books.
